Japan-Maldives Foreign Ministers’ Telephone Talk

On September 7, commencing at around 11:00 a.m. for approximately 20 minutes, Mr. HAYASHI Yoshimasa, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, held a telephone talk with H.E. Mr. Abdulla Shahid, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Maldives. The overview is as follows.

At the outset, Minister Shahid expressed his condolences for the passing of former Prime Minister Abe, and Minister Hayashi, in response, expressed his gratitude.
Minister Hayashi stated that Japan will work closely with Maldives, a key partner in realizing a "Free and Open Indo-Pacific”, in this year, the 55th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and the Maldives. In response, Minister Shahid expressed his gratitude for Japan’s assistance so far, and stated that he would like to cooperate with Minister Hayashi to strengthen bilateral relation.
Minister Hayashi stated that Japan highly commends Minister Shahid’s work as President of the 76th Session of the United Nations General Assembly, and expressed his continued expectations for Minister Shahid’s leadership. In response, Minister Shahid expressed his appreciation for Japan’s commitment to the United Nations during his tenure.
The two ministers also exchanged views on regional issues, and they concurred to continue cooperating with each other in the international arena.
